Typhoid Fever, also known as enteric fever, is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It leads to flu-like symptoms such as high-grade fever, malaise, diarrhea, and sometimes a rash. Typhoid Fever can be treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated, it can become life-threatening and cause serious complications such as internal bleeding, intestinal perforation, sepsis, encephalitis, meningitis, heart or kidney damage. Children are more susceptible to the infection than adults. The infection is spread through fecal-oral transmission, contaminated food, water, drinks, and poor hand hygiene. Blood tests, stool tests, urine tests, and Widal Test are needed to confirm the diagnosis. Antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment, and hospital admission may be necessary if complications arise. Prevention measures include getting vaccinated, using treated water, careful hand hygiene, proper disposal of human waste, and avoiding handling food and drinks for others if sick.
